Interpretations
Sep. 27th, 2023 08:12 pmThere is not a lot to work with when it comes to Christopher Freeman in the Prime Earth continuity (the current canon of DC Comics). I have filled in certain details from old continuity -- as seen in "A History", which includes his previous incarnations.
The thing is, there IS no continuity anymore. The timeline in the DC Universe as of "Rebirth" is canonically tampered with so writers can just bring back anything they like without trying to make it make sense. And it's not like the current writers even communicate with each other on lesser-used characters, since The New Champion of Shazam #2 (2022) has a cameo of Christopher on a missing poster, but he's referred to by his original nickname as Christopher "Kit" Freeman despite the name change back in 2012.
In canon, Christopher is likely intended as a cisgender, heterosexual, dyadic male. This roleplay version of the character is ambigender, pansexual, and intersex. They will answer to any pronouns and said pronouns often shift in the prose, from paragraph to paragraph. (Player is displacing some gender feelings onto the character, and no one can stop them.) The canonical Chris is somewhat anxious about his efforts to hide his powers, and often comes across as off-kilter and weird because of it.

Chris does canonically have trouble identifying when he is speaking to a ghost. This is a plot-point in his second story. Since Pumpkin Hollow is a setting where the island is under a curse and there have been a lot of deaths (even if the recent ones aren't permanent), Chris being uncertain of who's a ghost is even more likely. They can be considered someone with a strong sixth sense to be sought out when dead to assist in communication.
Their power of summoning the dead as ghosts (for a period of 24 hours) is limited to the dead of this reality. Chris does not currently know that fact. It will not be fun for them to find out.
In a previous continuity, "Kid Eternity" was able to summon up the spirits of the dead and even mythological figures to fight his battles and give him advice. While current Chris hasn't shown this ability, it is central to the original concept of the character. The power will be kept, but in the context of the game, Chris will have to meditate and send their spirit off to commune to the dead of their home reality. It will be played as a long process and Chris will have to recover from exhaustion afterward.
(Whenever Chris meditates to commune with a spirit from another reality, the experience will have an extra layer of distance, with 'voices' muffled as if speaking to each other from opposite sides of a pane of glass.)

The only family member who appears in canon is Chris's father -- in a dream that Chris is having about his death -- but this roleplay version will borrow from previous incarnations.
Father: David Freeman [deceased]
Mother: Rebecca Freeman, nee Troop [alive]
Older Brother: Frederick "Rick" Freeman [alive]
(While the original "Kit Freeman" was the brother of Freddy Freeman, AKA Captain Marvel Junior, it is currently unclear if they are related in Prime Earth/Rebirth continuity. Rick Freeman is not intended to be an alternate of Freddy.)
